Overview

This service is used to determine whether a developer should be permitted to carry out developments on undisturbed land. It also ensures the protection of archaeological resources. Any development on any undisturbed land should be preceded by an Archaeological Impact Assessment done by consultant. These developments include hotels, lodges, roads, borrow pits, dams. The Department of National Museum and Monuments, reviews and approves the Archaeological Impact Assessment reports and monitors existing development projects, as mandated by Section 19 of the Monument and Relics Act of 2001.

Citizens and Non-Citizens aged eighteen (18) years and above

How do I get this service?

The following steps are to be followed in order to obtain this service: 

  1. The developer contacts the department to establish whether they need to carry out an Archaeological Impact Assessment,  by telephone, post or fax.
  2. Where an assessment is required, the developer engages a consultant archaeologist accredited or approved by the Department of National Museum and Monuments. Download a List of accredited/approved consulting archaeologists from Downloadable Forms 
  3. The archaeologist carries out an assessment as per the guidelines for planners. Download Guidelines for Planners 
  4. The assessment reports are submitted to the department for review.
  5. The response is given within seven (7) working days. No development may take place before an archaeological impact assessment permit is given and mitigation measures implemented.
  6.  Chance discoveries during construction should be immediately reported to the department and the archaeological consultant. The work should be halted until the developer is advised on the way forward. Download Guidelines for Archaeological and Architectural Consultants
