The Radiation Protection Act of 2006 requires that anybody who works with radioactive sources and substances or material that emits ionizing radiation should be supplied with atleast one radiation monitoring device. The Radiation Protection Inspectorate (RPI), through the National Dosimetry Laboratory (NDL) provides a Radiation Monitoring Service that monitors individual exposure and radiation levels of the surrounding area due to ionizing radiation from external radiation sources. The service is provided using Harshaw Thermoluminescent Dosimeter (TLD) badges for both personnel and environmental monitoring. The TLD badges used are capable of assessing with sufficient accuracy doses from exposure to beta rays, gamma rays, x-rays or a mixture of these types of radiation. Monitoring periods begin on the 1st of each month and the RPI will provide quarterly radiation dose reports for personnel monitoring as well as for environmental monitoring.
This service is provided to facilities that are licensed to posses and/or use radiation sources.
In order to access this service, applicants must follow the following steps.
- Complete (NDL) Application for Radiation Monitoring Services (FORM/02/RPI-NDL/03) which is available for download on this site or in hard-copy at the Radiation Protection Inspectorate at the address listed below.
- Submit the application to the Radiation Protection Inspectorate at the address listed below before the 10th of the month prior to the month monitoring is to begin.
- Upon receipt of your application, a representative from the RPI will contact you to make arrangements to complete the Agreement for the Monitoring Service (AGREEMENT/02/RPI-NDL/03).
- TLD badges will be issued one week before the start of each monitoring period and will be exchanged quarterly.
- Hard-copy radiation dose reports will be issued within 5 days after receipt of the used badges.
Applicants require:
- Form/02/RPI-NDL/03- Application for Radiation Monitoring Service
Processing of the application and agreement take approximately 10 days, therefore applications must be received by the 10th of the month prior to the month monitoring services are to begin.
