Issuance of Livestock Permit

Overview
  • This service allows farmers to move animals across the country in order to achieve country wide traceability of animals.
  • Animal movement can be for the following purposes; for slaughter, for rearing and translocation.
Who is eligible?
  • Registered Livestock Keeper (citizens and non-citizens legally resident in Botswana)
  • Unregistered keeper (Diplomats, Tourists)
How do I get this service?
  • For farmers with access to internet connectivity, apply online using www.baits2.gov.bw
  • Farmers without internet connectivity visit BAITS cafes/agent.
  • For international permits only a request can be done online but collection of the permit is done at a local DVS office.
What supporting documents are required?
  • An original and valid Brand Certificate or certified copy
  • Valid Keeper ID Card
  • An import certificate with conditions from the country you are sending your consignment to.
How long will this service take?

One (1) working day depending on the quantity of consignment moved.

Issuance of Horticultural Products Permits

Overview

This service enables Importers and Exporters to import/export their horticultural produce. The restriction on the importation of horticultural produce is administered through CAP 43:08 Control of Goods Prices and other Charges Act using Import and Export of Agricultural Product Regulations. Individuals are not required to apply for a permit for personal consumption. 

Who is eligible?
  • Registered a company with the Registrar of Companies for a Trading Licence
  • Registered with the Council for Hawker's/Street Vendor's Licence
How do I get this service?

Interested citizens and businesses are required to visit the nearest Agribusiness Promotion Office with relevant supporting documents.

The authorised Permit Issuing Officer will complete, at the time of application, a permit form with specific details which include;

  • Quantities and type of crops to be imported
  • Border post of entry (Only one border post allowed per entry)
  • Country of produce import
  • Endorsement at the border post
  • Complete a horticultural crop import permit
  • Endorse the expiry date of the import permit
  • Authorize and issue the import permit
What supporting documents are required?
  • A certified copy of a valid National Identification card (Omang)
  • An original and valid trading licence
  • An original and valid hawkers licence 
  • A valid and original Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Certificate
  • A Letter of Authorisation to apply on behalf of the Company

One (1) working day

How much does it cost?

The issuing of a permit is free, but the applicants must apply for Sanitary and Phytosanitary certificate at BWP 300.00

Issuance of Permits for Dried Grains

Overview

This service enables Importers and Exporters to import/export the following products; grain-based animal feed for poultry and livestock; sorghum & sorghum products; maize & maize products; millet and millet products; wheat grain; pulses (castor beans, groundnuts); and sunflower seed.

  • Registered Businesses (Companies and Hawkers)
  • Citizens (Farmers and Individuals)
How do I get this service?

In order to attain a dried grains import permit, applicants should bring the relevant documents to the nearest authorized Permit Issuing Office where the Authorized Officer will fill in and complete, at the time of request, a permit form with specific details which include;

Quantities and type of locally procured products to be imported as follows;

  • 30% of the maize grain and 70% of the maize meal, samp, maize rice or animal feed for poultry and livestock
  • 50% of the sorghum grain and 70% of the sorghum meal, sorghum rice or any other processed sorghum product (animal feed).
  • Border post of entry
  • Country of origin of import
  • Endorsement at the border post by Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS).

  • Proof of local purchase
  • A certified copy of valid National Identification card (Omang)
  • An original and valid Hawkers or Trading License
  • A letter of Authorization to apply on behalf of the Company
  • A original and valid Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Certificate
  • A valid Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) Certificates

Insect Pest Identification and Management

Overview

This service assists applicants in the identification and management of pests.  

Who is eligible?

Any person interested in insect /pest identification and management including:

  • Horticulture farmers
  • Dryland farmers
  • Researchers
  • Other institutions. 
How do I get this service?
  • Download, complete and submit the Plant Pest Diagnostics Form​ with the sample to the entomology laboratory.
  • The evaluation report will be produced and explained to the customer.

Application for Training Services

Overview

The centres offer training services in all aspects of Crop Production, Animal Production, Marketing of Agricultural Produce, Agro-processing and Conservation of Natural Resources.

Farmers can register with the nearest Crop Production and Animal Production Extension Officer for the course of their choice and make agreements for commencement of training.

There are five Rural Training Centres in Botswana that offer training - Denman, Francistown, Southern, Ngamiland and Mahalapye Rural Training Centres.

Who is eligible?

Citizen farmers.

How do I get this service?

Contact the Agricultural Extension Officer at an Extension Area or District level for registration and training details.

What supporting documents are required?

Certified copy of valid National Identity Card (Omang).

How long will this service take?

Few minutes during registration. The duration of courses offered at these centres ranges from one (1)  to six (6) weeks.

Business Plan Appraisal for Farming

Overview

This service is meant to assess business plans for those farmers who want to apply to financial institutions for funding for start-ups or to rescale (expand, modify, abandon or replace) a project or their existing businesses. The farmer is intensively involved during the assessment process for ownership and is expected to explain and translate some issues that may prove to be difficult for the officer to easily understand.

Who is eligible?

Citizen and Non-Citizen farmer with:

  • A reliable water source (excluding rain-fed production).
  • A potential financier.
  • An existing project (for those who want to use it to manage or rescale their existing project).
How do I get this service?
  • Submit developed business plan for review at the District Agribusiness Promotion Office.
  • Once the assessment of the business plan is complete, the business plan is returned to the farmer who will then submit it to the financial institution to apply for funding or use it as a reference tool for rescaling of an existing project.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Proof of residence (a certified copy of resident permit for non- citizens).
  • A certified copy of a valid National Identity Card (Omang) for citizens.
  • A Land Rights Certificate (leased or allocated by Landboard Authorities).
  • A developed business plan.
  • A land assessment report by relevant departments.​​
How long will this service take?

Two (2) weeks.
